I love these guides as they provide the perfect balance between the practical information and "fun stuff." Rough Guides still get better and better, and this is the best I've bought (I have a collection of about 20 ). For long time fans, it's typical fare Rough Guides: This is a thick piece of paper that offers a flexible comprehensive coverage, more words than pictures, many cultural and historical context, simple and easy to read maps, special attention to the major natural attractions, a sample of the best accommodation and restaurants and a good bibliography of related books, movies and music. While it may seem more of the same, this guide offers the series to a new level of refinement. And what better country to reach that milestone truly beautiful Mexico! Serious and armchair travelers alike vagabonds deserve this good a guide.
While some things I liked about this book are some things that drove me crazy and difficult to use. One method is to use a numbering system for the price of hotel. It took me a long time to find the key to this system that is near the beginning of the book. Why not just put real prices and hotels separately in the budget, midrange and high end categories the way Lonely Planet does not?
Another thing was frustrating bus information. Near the end of my trip I realized I have the information at the end of each section of bus route list for that region, but in most cases, not all information about schedules. When is the last bus of the day? The first? Can I go to Oaxaca to San Cristobal? Reading this book you do not know if it is possible, however, there are three direct buses at night.
The third issue, and possibly the worst flaw of this book is the quality of the maps. They are much smaller and less detailed than the Lonely Planet. In one case we recommend a hotel room in the map that leads me to walk for an hour looking for him until he finally turned to go to an internet cafe to find the location online. Furthermore, hotels and restaurants are indicated with letters and numbers on the map, but it is not cross-referenced in the descriptions of the establishments to what I would do is find the name and the letter below, write the letter together to the hotel description for easy reference.
The index is also very poor. For example, I had seen some information on whale watching and could not find again. The index does not refer to the page you saw, but when you finally find it, was an activity for the region!
The book makes interesting reading as another critic said, but I wonder if he or she has never actually tried to use as a guide.
too small for the whole country, too thin for DF. inconsistent and a lot of mistakes. among the worst when it comes to rough guides.
