buy the Lonely Planet. The Rough Guide is a poor substitute.
This book is basically all missing the most essential things to look for in a guide. the maps are poorly made and lack detail. maps have very limited coverage. no information on pricing, which means to compare the places you have to take an extra step of calling to find out how much you actually paid. The index is poorly organized. and does not list the distances from one place to another so it makes reference to a lot of different travel times (usually only by bus, completely ignoring the people who drive themselves) to get an estimate of the travel time. I'm the kind of person who likes to create your own travel experience and use of this book made me feel like I am groping in the dark at times.
perhaps this is an effort by the authors to differentiate themselves from the Lonely Planet guide to its somewhat "rough". if that was their intention, no doubt succeeded. Unfortunately for the authors, when someone is in a foreign country alone with only a guide to tell where to stay, what to eat and how to get there, you need your guidance to be "global" and "accuracy" rather than rough . "
It gave me some interesting information for my recent trip, but as a guide is useless. All accommodations are clustered. You do not know if you're reading about a hotel that costs $ 10 or $ 400 per night. He rarely provides this information. The hotel we stayed in was in San Jose Marriott in San Antonio de Belén, a major hotel, one of the largest, but not in the guide. Other hotels are more expensive than listed. Frommers is the best in my opinion. Moon guide was quite good.
