Tim Rogers has condensed his 5 + years of living in Nicaragua in a readable and comprehensive handbook for aspiring expatriates and investors. Written directly to this audience, mixed with the funny show Tim and uses real examples taken directly from their everyday experience to educate the reader on what can sometimes be a crazy set of rules. Although I have lived and invested in Nicaragua for over 3 years there was a large amount of information new to me, largely content resonated with my experience here. Note: this is not a book tour, but people planning to visit Nicaragua could enjoy the prospect of such privileged information as a complement to a good tour guide as well.
Verified Amazon purchase (What is this?) Having spent a good amount of time in Nicaragua, and saw that live there, I would say that this book contains accurate and useful, probably the prospects of many things. If you are considering living and / or invest in Nicaragua, I would say this would be a must-have. Even a small piece of information or advice could make a big difference. It is a valuable resource.
That said, this is the worst book I remember reading. Ever. It urgently needs an editor, although the writer, Tim Rogers, intended as a self publisher. Incorrect spelling and poor word choices and sentence structure abound. If there is any similar book on the subject, I would not recommend this title.
In addition, the book is very well padded with filler. For example, the conjugation of verbs used with 'you' are useful to have. (Actually I have never seen the written rules anywhere before, as the textbooks most Spanish people do not talk about 'you', but used all the time in Nicaragua.) But do you really need a list of elementary Spanish vocabulary that anyone who has a prayer of having a conversation in Nicaragua already know? It could have been left out. And the metric conversion table? That is basic reference material is not necessary in a specialty book like this. Similar examples could be multiplied. The latest example of padding is the fact that entire paragraphs are simply duplicated, which appears in two different places in the book.
Despite its shortcomings, however, this book seems to be accurate and useful for English-speaking/reading people considering moving to or investing in Nicaragua. I have not come across anything I knew it was wrong. It coincides with my experience in the country. I recommend this book for now, but someone could easily write a better book on the subject. And oughta.
First, it is not a guide with information about hotels or restaurants, but is a useful guide for people thinking about living or investing in Nicaragua and want to know what to expect as an expatriate.
Good inside information from Mr Rogers, an American journalist living in Nicaragua to write for an English language newspaper and the Miami Herald.
The book is fun, too. A recommended reading for people who are seriously interested in Nicaragua, and for people already living there.
