Is It Safe To Travel Around Southern Africa?

I am going to travel around in southern africa…most likely with a buddy or two (botswana, zimbabwe, south africa) for 2 weeks or so. I certainly dont want to pay 10 grand (not including plane tickets) for a full guided tour although I am willing to have a travel agent make an itinerary and perhaps meet up with tour guides occasionally. Will this be safe? We are americans…my friends are ethnically white and I am ethnically chinese.

While you keep safe, you know – be careful what you eat and drink, have unprotected sex (High risk of HIV), all sorts of things. Do not go it alone at night (although that is usually targeted at women.)
No flash that are rich. You know – jewelry, watches, etc.
      You should be fine.
It is clear that South Africa will be much safer than Zimbabwe and Botswana, but just plan ahead, research, and should be impressive.

  2. I've been in South Africa 5 times – 3 times with a couple friends, twice with my daughter – and I'm leaving again in a couple of weeks. If renting a car and go on tour. we have never had bad experiences – no security problems at all. but avoid the big cities when we go to Cape Town is just to visit Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch,. . .
That does not mean you do not have to be careful: do not leave lugage in a car unattended, always lock your car. . .
I do not know about Botswana or Zimbabwe, but South Africa need not go on guided tours. just plan ahead – what do you want to visit – but do not make many reservations, because this makes it impossible to change plans once they get there. from South Africa has good tourist accommodation, should have no trouble finding a good B & B where they come from.
      enjoy your stay!

  3. Yes, it is safe as long as you avoid certain "no-go" areas such as town centers at night and Hillbrow in Johannesburg. No Hitch Hike and not flash your money. Use a tour guide at places like the Kruger Park, more to tell you what you are looking to travel safety.
I am a tourist guide and travel the country extensively in perfect safety.
Be more cautious in Zimbabwe because of poverty through politics, but Botswana is well I think they're pushing your luck to try to do all that in 2 weeks though.

  4. Be very careful to swallow that nonsense for an answer on whether it is safe. It is extremely dangerous in South Africa and he says that hasn't been the victim of a crime should have added the word "yet". It's just a matter of time and especially in places like Table Mountain and Kirstenbosch Gardens. There have been numerous violent attacks against tourists and there is even the tourism industry have given up trying to make it safe for visitors.
Note that crime news is censored by the regime in South Africa ANC and very inadequate to maintain statisitics reported crime, but South Africa still remains the most dangerous country in the world outside a war zone. Embassies in the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand to issue warnings to their citizens to travel there. Even Kenya has issued a warning to its citizens.
